Have you seen the reports that a combination of SSRIs (Prozac, I think)) and Modafinil has been successfully used to alleviate a particular type of depression?
Apparently, the purpose of the study was to investigate the utility of modafinil as an adjunctive treatment of depressed patients -- particularly those who complained of significant fatigue and/or excessive sleepiness on clinical assessment. The study can be found at J Clin Psychiatry. 2005 Jan;66(1):85-93.

It should be noted that, sleep debt has been tested/experimented in a number of studies, most notably by Klerman and Dijk through the use of a sleep onset latency test. This test attempts to measure how easily someone can fall asleep. When this test is done several times during the day, it is called a multiple sleep latency test (MSLT). The subject is told to go to sleep and is awakened after a short period of time to determine the amount of time it took to fall asleep.
