Oscar Pistorius Now … Elective Amputation in 10 Years?

The anticipation is rising for Oscar Pistorious’ race at the 2012 Summer Olympics. Pistorius, nicknamed “Blade Runner” and “The Fastest Man On No Legs”, is the first ever amputee to compete in the World Olympics, with his first race scheduled to take place August 4th.

The bioethical concerns voiced over Milo and Patrick’s decision to electively amputate will only be relevant in that relative eyeblink of a time window between now and when we are able to fully regenerate the relevant tissue.

…Until such time as we are able to produce bionics that are obviously superior to the meat they replace, at which point the argument will resume in full force, and as all parties shall be forewarned and forearmed, in much greater vigor than last time.

I’m surprised that no one has mentioned that remarkable work of speculative fiction, Limbo, by the late Bernard Wolfe.

It talked about several of these issues in the 1960s.
