I like the historical breakdown of our movement toward being a Type 1 civilization. I do think that we will need to progress in terms of our ethics and responsibility as individuals and as a species before we can achieve this goal. The technology might well be the easy part.
As a species we are entrenched in our understanding of how we govern ourselves. In many ways we are very similar to ethics and understanding of human responsibility of the ancients. We still assume that power/violence is necessary to rule. Part of that assumption is that we need someone to rule over us as we are too chaotic to cooperate otherwise. We also assume that the economy must necessarily be one of “all we can get” rather than of sufficiency. The suggestion that we should just have enough and little more is derided as socialist and unrealistic.
Having said that, I think it is good to remind ourselves what we are aiming for.
