Implantable Neuroprosthetics: Technologies & Techniques

May 16-21, 2010
Center for Neural Communication Technology
University of Michigan,  Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA
Application Deadline: April 9, 2010

This CNCT summer short course is intended for graduate students, post-doctoral researchers, and faculty, who are interested in the design, use, and analysis of microscale neural probes for neural recording, stimulation, and associated applications. Participants should have some familiarity with surgical procedures in small laboratory animals. They should also have strong interests in the application or assessment of devices for recording or stimulating CNS activity.

The specific aims of the course are

  • To familiarize participants with best practices for the handling and insertion of microfabricated neuroprosthetic devices. All participants will learn surgical procedures for insertion of chronic devices
  • To provide hands-on experience in methods for impedance measurements, neural recording, and stimulation
  • To provide hands-on experience in methods for tissue preparation, confocal microscopy imaging, and image analysis
  • To provide a common set of methods and standard operating procedures for device use, and benchmarks for evaluation of device performance

The course will be rigorous, but also relaxed and fun with an intensive, laboratory-centered format.  Morning sessions will involve lectures and discussions. Afternoon sessions will involve hands-on laboratory projects in well-equipped laboratories at the University of Michigan. Evening sessions will involve topical discussions of emerging technologies and discoveries in neuroscience and neural engineering.  A main aspect of the course is the opportunity for close interaction with other participants and faculty in a collegial atmosphere.

Ann Arbor is an excellent venue for this course. There will be many things to see and do during breaks and after sessions, including numerous restaurants, concerts, nightclubs, and bars. The course participants will stay in modern on-campus housing within walking distance of campus commercial districts.

Course Fees are $1800, and include laboratory fees, laboratory supplies, the cost of on-campus housing at the University of Michigan, and lunch each day. Participants should plan to arrive on May 16 for a 4PM lecture and depart on May 21 after 12 noon. Airport transportation can be arranged through the CNCT.  Off-campus housing can be arranged at attendee’s expense, but full course fees will still apply.  Participants will need to confirm attendance and submit payment of $1800 course fees by April 30.  Payment methods will be explained in acceptance notification.
