What Are H+ Seminars & Salons?
——————————————————-
Seminars: Speakers with expertise in key areas of transhumanism-related science, technology, art, philosophy, etc.
Sessions will generally consist of one-hour lectures followed by 30
minutes of questions and discussion. To make full use of the
interactive medium, the lecture portion will normally pause at roughly
the 1/3 and 2/3 points for brief questions and discussion. The
Elluminate interface allows free text-chat discussion among participants to occur in parallel with the lecture.
Salon sessions: 60-90 minute moderated discussions on specific
transhumanist topics. Typically the moderator will give a 5-10
minute introduction to the topic at and, followed by moderated video-chat discussion, in parallel with unmoderated text-chat discussion. (For historical background on the “salon” concept ask
Wikipedia.)
Using Elluminate
————————————
Elluminate is “virtual classroom” software, used in a large number of universities for their e-learning efforts, as well as by some companies and nonprofits. To quote the feature list: “Its communication tools include integrated Voice over IP and teleconferencing, public and private chat, quizzing and polling, emoticons, and a webcam tool. The software includes several visual tools, including whiteboard, application sharing, file transfer, and web tour. The software also includes a record feature that allows the moderator to record the class for others to watch later as well as a graphing tool, breakout rooms for group work, and timer. The whiteboard supports the uploading of presentations for viewing on the whiteboard for class or meeting.”
To use Elluminate to log into a H+ Seminar or Salon session, simply click on the following URL

or paste it into your Web browser. If you haven”™t used Elluminate before, you may want to do this 5-15 minutes or so before the session starts, just to be sure no browser issues arise. (Note that you can”™t log into the Elluminate classroom at any random time, only during or slightly before or after the seminars, because the session moderator has to be logged in to Elluminate, in order for the room to be
available.)
