Governing Emerging Technologies

Posted: Aug 17, 2008

Gordon Research Conference on Science and Technology Policy
Governing Emerging Technologies”
Big Sky, MT, 17-22 August 2008

http://www.grc.org/programs.aspx?year=2008&program=scipolicy

First Call for Poster Proposals
Deadline: 7 January 2008 (rolling thereafter)

The organizers of the 2008 Gordon Research Conference (GRC) on Science and Technology Policy (STP) issue this request for abstracts for the poster sessions associated with its upcoming meeting on “Governing Emerging Technologies.” As with most scientific conferences, poster sessions are often where new data and major projects are first presented.  Posters by researchers at all professional levels – from early career scholars, including graduate students, to accomplished researchers – are an integral part of the GRC on STP. Poster presenters will engage in conversation about their posters with more than 100 other participants during relaxed late afternoon sessions.  Every attendee is welcome and encouraged to propose a poster.

The deadline for submission of poster abstracts is 7 January 2008, with consideration and acceptances continuing thereafter on a rolling basis as space allows.  Abstracts should be 250-300 words in length, clearly describing the research question(s) addressed, the methodology employed, and the argument to be made.  Poster proposals will be judged according to the following criteria:

  • Relevance to overall meeting themes of emerging technologies or the governance of technologies (please see the conference website for more details: http://www.grc.org/programs.aspx?year=2008&program=scipolicy) or to emerging themes for science/technology policy not covered in this research conference
  • Quality, clarity, and originality of ideas
  • Appropriateness for presentation as a poster, including the potential for visual representations and graphics to support the arguments
  • Representation of a diversity of themes, perspectives, and participants.

If accepted, you will be provided with an official letter of acceptance that may be helpful in soliciting funds to assist in your attendance at the conference.  Funds are often available from the conference organizers for the support of graduate students and other junior scholars.

For more information, to begin developing a poster idea, or to submit an abstract, please email the Poster Committee Chair: Roger Pielke, Jr (.(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)).  For more information on the GRC on STP generally, please contact the 2008 co-chairs: David Guston (.(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)) or Rachel Ankeny (.(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) ).

Note that you must apply separately to attend the conference: an online application is available from http://www.grc.org/application.aspx?id=10384
