Steven Lee, the guidance, navigation, and control manager for the Mars Science Laboratory mission at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California, describes how NASA plans to land and navigate its new Curiosity rover on the surface of Mars in 2012.

We want to find out how much water there is on Mars besides at the poles; how much water is under the Martian surface.



There is this idea that space-suited humans could do better science-per-dollar than robot probes. We surely COULD hit golf balls, plant flags, and spout hubris better than any of those rovers (probably). Still, I love this. I can't wait.
