Animals rescue people all the time, but not like this. Jim Eggers is a 44-year-old man who suffers from a problem that not only puts his life at risk—it jeopardizes the safety of everybody around him. But with the help of Sadie, his pet African Grey Parrot, Jim found an unlikely (and seemingly successful) way to manage his anger.

In this short radio program, African Grey Parrot expert Irene Pepperberg helps us understand how this could work, and shares some insights from her work with a parrot named Alex.

From my experience ( I have four African greys) these birds pick up on ones moods and are extemely intelligent. Just an example...Another parrot that I had for over 20 years unexpectedly died and I was very upset and sad. One of my Greys came over to me as I was sitting in a chair crying and put his head down for scratches. This was a bird that did not like being touched or handled and would bite if I tried. He seemed to sense my sadness and for the next half hour sat with me and let me scratch his head and neck in what seemed like an effort to comfort me somehow. Also interesting...The Greys knew the deceaseed birds name "Merlin" and would routinely call to her. After she passed they did not say her name again. These birds are far smarter and intuitive than they are given credit for.
