Maybe we are living in post-irony times.
Rushkoff's message is vital, true and needed. He does have a prophetic voice.
Too bad that thousands of people who could be of assistance in spreading that message and helping it become reality will feel insulted and alienated by wrapping it in humor that denegrates one of the original prophets of the very message he is trying to get across.
Shooting yourself in the foot looks a lot like not building bridges and coalitions.
All that said, congrats on the sainthood! However the message gets out, it is an important one to spread.

We welcome "dor" to come to our worship at "The Church of Earthalujah!" You apparently do not agree with the person who posted the video, who found the ceremony "moving." I did too. (The performances are Sunday evenings at 7:30 at Theatre 80 in the east village in NYC, info at Revbilly.com.) We have discovered that humor and worship are not as mutually exclusive as one would think. And our ecumenical attempt at honoring Jesus - especially our belief that He would have opposed American shopping culture - does have widespread support in the traditional Christian world. We have performed at Sojourners, at Yale Divinity School, and at Baptist, Episcopal, Unitarian, and Presbyterian churches. Our film "What Would Jesus Buy?" has been screened in Christian film festivals across the world. Saint Douglas Rushkoff joins creative ethicists like Joan Baez, Kurt Vonnegut, Daniel Elsberg who have accepted our sainthood - looking for a way to respect Jesus that results in Peace, not a harsh fundamentalism.
@Rev. Billy Talen
Thanks for the follow-up post. I wish I could attend, but am geographically challenged.
Glad to hear you are in such fine company. I greatly admire Jim Wallis and the other creative ethicists you mentioned. That is the trouble with clips, I suppose; they take things out of context.
Thank you for setting me straight.
