The Future of the Workplace - Workers’ Self-Management?

TheLeftLibertarian

The Left-Libertarian

Posted: Nov 27, 2012

“On cooperation vs. competition, I would check out the book, No Contest: The Case Against Competition. The author debunks the myth that competition is better than cooperation by going over 500 studies and showing that in almost every case, cooperation is much better.

One thing I didn’t cover was how to start a Workers Managed company. Obviously, there is no huge incentive to start one. In a Left-Libertarian society, communities and workplaces are highly linked to each other so starting a cooperative would be no problem. Of course, we dont live in this type of society. There are a number of ways to proceed. Anyone can start one of these companies which is a start but again, no incentive, except for humanitarian reasons. Some people have suggested anarcho-syndicalism. In a nutshell, anarco-syndicalism uses unions in a grass-roots fashion. Basically, unions connect with other unions and form a federation. At some point, the unions go on strike driving the companies out of business. After that, the workers start running the workplace on their own. This is pretty much what happened during the Spanish Civil War.”

On the wake of the Bangladesh fire that killed more than 100 people in the Tazreen Fashion sweatshop and injured many others, we need to re-think how the workplace is run - all over the world.

The video has much valuable content, but would be much more compelling if narrated 10-20% more slowly, and with much more varied affect: as it is, you sound like you're reading a grocery list at a steady canter. The same graphics could be used, just switched more slowly. Make more use of pauses, variations in tone, pitch, and emphasis, etc. Let us know you love the things and people you're talking about.

Thanks for the article. Libertarian-based co-ops are happening every day; one problem is the confusion with Marxist theory/leftism and also current statutes/tax assumptions that make forming them difficult.

For info on people using voluntary Libertarian tools on similar and other issues worldwide, please see the non-partisan Libertarian International Organization @ http://www.Libertarian-International.org ....

This video IS about leftism, in fact it is about direct-democracy, libertarian-socialism, and anarcho-syndicalism. TheLeftLibertarian makes this clear on thier youtube channel - it is the form of left-libertarianism that stems from Europe and is commonly talked about in length by professor Noam Chomsky.

"This is pretty much what happened during the Spanish Civil War.”

The Spanish Civil War was the dress rehearsal for WWII, all the pent-up class fury came out into the forefront. The Spanish Church was the ancien regime incarnate: anticlerics making bitter enemies of Catholics gave Franco an edge against anarchists and others who attacked the Church. Plus Stalin was not the kind of guy to make an alliance with.

"...and also current statutes/tax assumptions"

You got it, Robert. The statutes are patch-work, crazy-quilt; only by going into another diatribe on anachronism can I go into detail. Yet a random example will do:
first a city votes partial legalisation of marijuana, then rescinds it a couple years later though vendors outside city limits can continue to sell marijuana; then in 2012 the city re- 'legalises' marijuana after all the in-city vendors had closed their doors 23 months before.
There's a comforting numb familiarity about it.
