Tierney on Kass’ Anti-Logic

Posted: Nov 27, 2007

In the NY Times John Tierney tries to parse Leon Kass’ objections to “soulless scientism” and concludes

Well, it’s not exactly an argument: I think, therefore I’m right. I can see how, by that mystical logic, Dr. Kass is willing to let people die rather than let them be cured by stem cells produced with embryos. I can see why he’s willing to forbid reproductive cloning under any circumstances. I can see why he even says he doesn’t like the idea of other biotechnologies greatly expanding the human lifespan. To him this is “unnatural” and a threat to human “dignity” — and once he has convinced himself of something, it must be a cosmological truth not just for him but for everyone else.
