Reliving Apollo 11

Where were you on July 20, 1969? Many of us can recall exactly where we were and what we were doing when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to walk on the Moon. (Of course, a good number of our readers probably were not even born then.)

But whether or not you can remember that far back, a unique project of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum, in cooperation with AOL, is giving us all a chance to relive that historic event.

WE CHOOSE THE MOON is an interactive website designed to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the first moon landing, inspired by U.S. President Kennedy’s grand vision that made the achievement possible.

On July 16, 2009, at 9:32 AM (EDT)—exactly 40 years to the minute after the historic launch—the giant Saturn V rocket will lift off again, virtually, and the site will recreate Apollo 11’s lunar mission, minute by minute, with an interactive experience that lets visitors experience the mission as it happened, using archival audio, video, photos and “real-time” transmissions on the site and via Twitter.

Mike Treder is the Managing Director of the IEET, and former Executive Director of the non-profit Center for Responsible Nanotechnology.

In Capri, a beautiful rocky island in southern Italy, watching the landing on TV all night with my family and friends. I was 11. Watching the moon landing is one of the most beautiful things I remember. I hope kids may soon watch similar things again.
