Professor of Politics at the University of Sheffield, Matthew Flinders, argues for a shift from the bland and fatalistic ‘politics of pessimism’ that appears to dominate public life, towards a more buoyant and engaged ‘politics of optimism’.
All true, but I know America, and 'we' might have to fight the GOP and their ilk the rest of 'our' lives. You know how they do things in America, they viciously hash it out- pretty much what the Framers wanted. Such wont change much in this decade, that's for sure-- an obvious fact.
What can you tell rubes who live more in 1776 than 2012? By asking America to move away from the outmoded ways of '76 in a sense we ask for America to cease being America. Not to say give up, however to be pollyannish in the past was foolish.. to be so today is damn near slow suicide.
Main point is: people do not spend their entire lives gaining power over others to just relinquish power just like that.
