IEET Readers Would Relax Drug Laws

Only 5% of IEET readers would keep drug laws as they are or would make them even more restrictive, according to a recently concluded poll. A large majority favors more liberal approaches.

In this article, we asked our readers what should be done about illegal narcotics, specifically with regard to the decades-long U.S. “war on drugs.” We opened a poll on the subject that has been running for the past three weeks. The results are unambiguous.

Just over 40% of respondents chose the most liberal answer, which is to remove all restrictions and legalize all drugs. Another 15% say that total legalization might be a step too far, but that Portugal-style decriminalization seems like a good idea. And 35% would legalize marijuana, if not other drugs.
