Battle Between the Sexes

Feb 10, 2010

When it comes to the future of gender relations, IEET readers can’t seem to agree on anything.

The question we asked in a recently concluded poll was “Will relations between women and men be much different around 2050 than they are now?”

About a third of respondents indicated they expect technology to have a major impact, with genetic engineering, biotechnology, and/or the development of lifelike androids to make a mark. But about 19% of our readers think male-female relationship structures are so ingrained that not very much will change.

The largest number of respondents, not quite half, say it won’t be technology that will make the difference; rather, it will be legal and cultural adjustments to changing ideas about how the sexes should relate.

“Other” answers included:

• It is up to us to make the change we want to see. We have a long way to go.
• Feels like stupid idiot gender as usual.
• All of the above.
• Gender and technology will blur, but society will be reactionary and slow to adapt.
• Transhumanism won’t happen.
