One in five students in Mexico City doesn't mind earning money from prostitution

Many students at universities in Central and South America, such as Mexico, Argentina, Brazil and Chile, moonlight as prostitutes. This is demonstrated by a study carried out by the Pander Group.

Some 4,000 young people of university age were interviewed.

It turned out that in Buenos Aires, 29.2% of university students think about voluntary work in the sex sector, in Mexico City - 18.5%. In Brasilia, however, every third student surveyed had seriously considered prostitution.

In addition, the study showed that 52.3% of students who prostitute themselves have a regular boyfriend or girlfriend. Of these, 48.9% described themselves as heterosexual, 13.3% as homosexual and 37.8% as bisexual.

Benicio Camorañeto, one of the authors of the study, states, "Sex work not only includes prostitution, but also striptease, phone sex, sex on demand (escort) or undressing in front of spectators on the Internet (webcam)."

"The main findings of the study are that one out of 27 students surveyed has already had experience in the sex industry or is still working in it. This is an impressive figure. We were also surprised that the number of boys in this profession is the same. We expected more women," says Camorañeto.

At the same time, researcher Anna Zabigniewicz noted: "For the study we chose cities that are not similar to each other. Mexico City is the most liberal capital in Latin America, where prostitution is legalized. In Argentina, on the other hand, prostitution is illegal, and in Brasilia it is somewhere in between: some types are allowed and others are not."

According to the authors of the study, most of the students explain their choice of this type of activity by the fact that it brings good money in a short time.
