Steven Umbrello

Steven Umbrello currently serves as the Managing Director at the Institute for Ethics and Emerging Technologies and is also an IEET Advisory Board member. He studied philosophy of science and technology at the University of Toronto and is now studying epistemology, ethics and mind at the University of Edinburgh.

Steven currently serves as a junior associate at the Global Catastrophic Risk Institute where his primary research and authorship is on atomically precise manufacturing (APM) and other nanotechnology. This research explores the extent and impacts that nanotechnology has on the environment, society as well as the military and surveillance. Particular emphasis is given to potential governing strategies of APM and how this can be applied to other emerging technologies.

Steven is an affiliated scholar at and is an associated review board member of the Transhuman Policy Center. Steven also works as a policy coordinator for North America with the Global Healthspan Policy Institute where he is charged with the research and development of policy initiatives regarding biogerontology policy.
