Dr. J. chats with Max More, founder of the Extropy Institute and one of the founders of contemporary transhumanism. They discuss the relationship of transhumanism and religion, virtue theory versus utilitarianism and the ethical and political underpinnings of the extropian worldview. Part 2 of 2. (Part 1 is here)
Timely.
BTW, I don't respond directly to many articles here, as without a comprehensive science (and math) background there's nothing to add to the discussion. However, Mario Coccia brought up some interesting issues on the Biopolitics and the “Culture of Life†thread. He has stopped replying to my comments because 1) he has better things to; 2) it's difficult to discuss these "things" without sounding-- or being-- confrontational; and: 3) because virtue/lack thereof is embarrassing to a religious person, esp. as they themselves are covertly dualistic concerning virtue.
Dialogues between transhumanists and religionists can and will be worthwhile if we ASAP dig as deeply as decorum permits into what the differences between transhumanists and religionists are, even at the risk of confrontation. Confrontation with them is unavoidable as, IMO, religionists are rather too devious for their own good; such appears at first glance to be a harsh generalization, yet if you examine their behavior you will eventually realize religionists are not so much hypocritical as they are confused; when they claim they are bringing a burden upon themselves by even merely attempting to be virtuous, they are entirely correct--
great self-pressure is brought to bear.
What have we got to lose anymore by trying to reach them? If they claim we are being too confrontational, let's point out we can't constantly repeat, "IMO"; "I don't mean to be rude"; or "sorry".
Especially if we are not really all that sorry to begin with
