Genetic architecture is an exciting, promising, and highly conceptual field that suggests we can bridge the gap between biology, artificial intelligence, and architecture.
The end of result would see not just the integration of living and inert matter, but the radical transformation of the entire planet itself.

Karl Chu, a leading figure in this area, calls it the “architecture of possible worlds.” And he isn’t thinking small.
Chu acknowledges that a future in which genetic architecture exists will be one in which humanity has gone through a number of paradigm shifts. He envisions a future in which humans have migrated to post-humanity and exist as “multiple beings” who take part in the emergent collective that is the “global brain.” Because Chu considers architecture as an extension of the human and post-human being, he sees great potential for architecture to radically evolve along with its inhabitants and designers. As part of this vision, Chu and other genetic architects imagine buildings and other objects of our design as being transformed into living entities (if not beings) endowed with certain levels of intelligence and capacities. It will twist our notions of what we have traditionally considered to be lifeless objects, as much of our environment will become endowed with life and even intelligence.
Future “genetic buildings” could, for example, be self-assessing, self-healing and self-modifying, thus minimizing their need to be repaired or maintained by external sources. They will morph, process, and react. These buildings could even meet the needs of its inhabitants by sensing the moods or health of its occupants and act accordingly. Needless to say, the potential for sustainability is substantial.

Chu also notes that genetic architects are not trying to imitate or copy biology. Rather, they are looking to significantly expand the space of possible intentional design through the integration of artificial intelligence and biological processes. He looks at our planet as eventually becoming a massive computing system-a very literal take on the concept of the global brain. The role of architecture is to facilitate and conceptualize this transformation.
The end result could potentially see the Earth as a massive computational and “self-aware” system in which all its components, inhabitants and systems are endowed with intelligence.

This to me is a view into madness. New Jerusalem?? I do hope I am long gone before this ever takes hold or God stops it all in its tracks before it alters our humanity so profoundly and irreversibly. I understand what Pope John Paul was referring to when he spoke of philosophy without God being unintelligible.

Life itself becomes a mere ‘thing’, which man claims as his exclusive property, completely subject to his control and manipulation.

So, “anything” can be made “human.” “Thinking” won’t even be needed, so you won’t have to worry about anyone posting opposing views on your blog. We will all be robots.

We explored similar concepts in university specifically involving interactive architecture, incorporating bio-structures and impacts on design. There are some really interesting ideas involving the merger between organic systems and human living spaces which i think would directly affect the way we see ourselves, our societies and the natural world. Such dramatic shifts in our perspectives, which are likely to occur as this century unfolds, should see a similar change reflected in where we live and how. I for one would be delighted to see such developments in my lifetime, a future which opens ever more possibilities and enables ever greater innovation, augmentation and improvement. Shame about the fundamentalist hijacking but the net seems to be crawling with them these days.
i agree with Takahana. There’s no need for all these closed minded racist comments. when an argument gets compared to Hitler in WWII it no longer has any grounds. its a fallacy, you’ve strayed so far from the topic at hand that what ever it is you have to say can no longer be considered relevant. Because its not.
I like the idea, it would be nice to have some organic architecture instead of all these cement buildings.

The unintentional significance of certain meaningful architects attempting to periodically throughout history, fantasize about the future of architecture are to be commended for their “futile by association†attempts to influence a stoic profession and its followers toward higher, innovative “future-idyllic†building manifestations ostensibly for the benefit of a falsely expected new enlightened building society.
